This Land, Our Land

The Kulin Nation is a term used for five related wurrung (language) groups across south central Victoria: Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurong, Wadawurrung, Boonwurrung and Wurundjeri woiwurrung.

Wurundjeri woiwurrung biik (Country) extends east to the Werribee River, north-west to Mount Macedon, east to Mount Baw Baw, north to the Great Dividing Range behind Healesville, south to Mordialloc Creek and along the northern boundaries of the swamplands of Koo Wee Rup.

Within Wurundjeri woiwurrung biik there are various clan groups that are made up of different family groups. These are:

  • Wurundjeri balluk
  • Wurundjeri Willum
  • Marin balluk
  • Gunung Willum balluk
  • Balluk Willum
  • Ngurrak Willum
  • Kurung Jang baluk

Each clan was responsible for different parts of Wurundjeri woiwurrung biik. Those responsible for goranwarrabil (the Dandenong Ranges) were the Wurundjeri balluk and the Ngurrak Willum. The arrival of European invaders saw Wurundjeri woiwurrung people pushed off their biik, family groups separated, and Culture and wurrung (Language) suppressed.
